About this scholarship
Short-term 1-12 month cooperative research visits for pre- and postdoctoral researchers based in the UK or Ireland, hosted by leading research groups at Japanese universities and institutions, in any field from computer science, engineering, health, biological, life, natural and physical sciences and mathematics to humanities and social sciences.
Minimum requirements
Based in the UK or Ireland for research purposes as of 1 April 2026; postdoctoral candidates must have obtained their PhD at a university outside Japan within the last 6 years (on or after 2 April 2021); PhD students must be enrolled in a doctoral course in the UK or Ireland and be scheduled to receive their PhD within 2 years of starting tenure; nationals or permanent residents of the UK, EU member states, Switzerland, Norway, the USA or Canada (other nationals with 3+ years continuous research in the UK or Ireland may also be eligible); an agreed research plan and a signed invitation letter from a Japanese host researcher are required; previous recipients of another JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship type are not eligible; the fellowship is awarded once only.
Application checklist
- Confirm you are based in the UK or Ireland for research and meet the nationality/residence rule
- Agree a research plan with a Japanese host researcher and obtain a hand-signed invitation letter
- Prepare evidence of correspondence with the host (no more than 10 A4 pages)
- Check PhD timing: postdocs within 6 years, PhD students scheduled to finish within 2 years of starting tenure
- Email the completed application to lon-short-termfellowship@overseas.jsps.go.jp before 09:00 UK time on 9 November 2026
Application tips
- The invitation letter must carry a hand-written signature; a signature typed in a handwriting-style font is not accepted, so request it from your host early.
- Do not confuse this JSPS London call with the ASEAN-route Short-term call: different nominating route, different deadline (16 November 2026) and different submission channel.
- Tenure must be a full number of months and cannot be split across stays, so plan one continuous visit between June 2027 and March 2028.
- If your PhD certificate arrives after the start date, the allowance rises only from the first payment following a month after submission, never retroactively.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
