Minimum requirements
First or upper second-class undergraduate honours degree (or non-UK equivalent) in a relevant subject; research experience as part of, or outside of, a university degree course, or a master's degree in a relevant subject.
Application checklist
- Confirm a first or upper second-class undergraduate honours degree (or non-UK equivalent) in a relevant subject, plus research experience within or outside a degree course, or a master's in a relevant subject
- List your top three projects of interest in preferential order if more than one project is advertised
- Register an account on the online PhD recruitment portal and complete every section in full, plus the mandatory equality, diversity and inclusion form
- Provide details of two to three referees (one must be your current or most recent employer, supervisor or tutor; at least one must be able to comment on your academic record or supervised research experience) and make sure referees send references to pgr@cruk.manchester.ac.uk with your full name in the subject line
- Write a concise summary (max 500 words) of your academic interests and career aspirations, including why you want a PhD and why at CRUK Manchester Institute — and submit before 17:00 GMT on 6 November 2026; late applications are not accepted and no amendments are possible after submission
Application tips
- No CV, transcripts or English certificates are needed at application stage — they are required only at University registration if you are offered a place, so do not delay the application to assemble them.
- Referee emails must match exactly the addresses on your form, and the subject line must carry your full name, or the reference cannot be matched.
- The 500-word interests statement is a shortlisting document: name the project area and explain why CRUK Manchester Institute specifically.
- Interviews (11 January 2027) include a 10-minute critique of a pre-selected paper plus questions — practise a paper critique, not just a project pitch.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
