About this scholarship
A two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan's Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS), pairing AI researchers with domain scientists — or domain experts with AI mentors — to apply AI to basic science. It is a distinct host programme from the Schmidt AI in Science fellowships at NUS and Oxford, with a 23 November 2026 priority deadline and an August/September 2027 start.
Minimum requirements
PhD conferred before the start date and received after 1 September 2022; no tenure-track-equivalent faculty appointment; deep expertise in AI or domain science plus interest in the other; two U-M faculty mentors required (one AI Mentor, one Science Mentor, different departments favoured, prior/current mentor ineligible, one Fellow per mentor per two years across MIDAS fellowships); at least 50% in-person at MIDAS postdoctoral offices; about 10% programme service. In-scope domains: biological/biomedical basic processes (not disease diagnosis/prevention/treatment development), earth/environmental science, engineering, physical science and mathematics; AI broadly including machine learning, robotics, Bayesian inference and simulation.
Application checklist
- Confirm PhD conferred before the start date and received after 1 September 2022, with no tenure-track-equivalent faculty appointment
- Secure two University of Michigan faculty mentors: one AI Mentor and one Science Mentor, from different departments where favoured, neither a prior or current mentor, and no more than one Fellow per mentor per two years across MIDAS fellowships
- Prepare CV, up to 3 AI keywords, research tagline (maximum 8 words), research blurb (maximum 300 words, third person), research statement (maximum 2 pages), Individualized Development Plan (maximum 2 pages), Responsible AI statement (maximum 0.5 page), three best papers
- Obtain a letter of support from each mentor with the exact required language
- Arrange 2-3 references
- Submit by the priority deadline of 23 November 2026, 11:59 pm EST, for full consideration
Application tips
- Line up the mentor pair first — the two-mentor rule (AI plus Science, different departments favoured, prior/current mentor ineligible) is the hardest structural requirement and cannot be fixed after submission.
- Check the scope boundary: biological/biomedical work must concern basic processes, not disease diagnosis, prevention or treatment development.
- Plan for at least 50% in-person presence at the MIDAS postdoctoral offices, plus about 10% programme service.
- Apply by the 23 November priority deadline for full consideration — offers follow from February 2027.
Always verify deadline, amount and eligibility on the official page before applying. Values marked ESTIMATE are based on a previous cycle and are not confirmed for the current round.
